On 29 August 2005 Katrina, a category 5 hurricane, struck the US Gulf coast, causing widespread devastation from central Florida to Texas. In greater New Orleans the storm surge breached the levees in 53 different places, flooding 80% of the city. 1,836 deaths were recorded across the affected area, while 705 people were posted as missing. It was the most deadly hurricane to hit the United States since the 1928 Hurricane Okeechobee, which killed 2,500 people in Florida.

A week after Katrina, Magnum photographer Larry Towell travelled along the coast to witness and document the scenes of the disaster, accompanied by novelist Ace Atkins. In the Wake of Katrina records Larry Towell's images of Katrina's aftermath, and includes an introduction by Timothy Prus and an afterword by Ace Atkins.
